These months are not the hottest season in the gaming industry – it’s rather a period of relaxed vacations. But still, some very good games have been released in July and August 2018. Here is a list of the most interesting among them, which caught my eye.
Octopath Traveler
This game is a classic JPRG (Japanese Role-Playing game), and I think, all the fans of this genre just should try it. “Octopath Traveler” mixes the unique style from the 16-bit era (something of the first “Final Fantasy” games) and modern power of 3D graphics – 2D images of the main heroes travel all around the gorgeous 3D world.
Players can choose one of the eight characters at the game start, and this choice will determine the whole storyline. It’s worth to try all of the heroes, because they open doors to eight different plots, not really connected to each other. The game invites to interesting explorations and amazing turn-based battles, where the heroes have so many moves and possible strategies, that the battling becomes a kind of thoughtful art.
“Octopath Traveler” is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch game consoles. Buy it in the official shop here:
*Gamers can taste such turn-based battles in the game “Sonny” – it has free versions for Android and iOS devices, a free browser version, and paid (but very cheap) PC version (through Steam). Read the review of “Sonny” here.
Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion
Real fans of the popular cartoon series “Adventure Time” can’t miss this game – here you’ll meet all the characters, voiced by the same actors. They travel across the floated Land of Ooo, fight pirates, and try to figure out what caused this disaster (or maybe would we say – a new adventure?).
Players control Finn, Jake, BMO, and Marceline, explore the open world on a boat, battle opponents in the turn-based style (yep, again we have turn-based battles – is this a gaming trend nowadays?).
If you don’t really like the cartoon, you can freely skip this game. Many reviewers criticize emptiness of the world and repetitiveness of actions. Still, real “adventurers” will be totally fascinated – that’s why I’ve included the game into this list.
“Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion” is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC:

WarioWare Gold
Maybe this guy is an evil opposition of famous Mario, but he definitely knows how to have fun. Wario offers lots of entertainment to gamers in his new game for Nintendo 2/3DS consoles.“WarioWare Gold” is a collection of hilarious micro-games, and it is even more than this – players complete lots and lots of various tasks, earn virtual gold, and then spend it on new entertainments.
The game reminds the style of “Game & Watch” handheld consoles by Nintendo from the dawn of the gaming culture (the 1980s). Some of Wario’s tasks in a way copy games on those devices.
Buy “WarioWare Gold” on the official Nintendo shop:
Chasm
Evil monsters are spread all over the virtual kingdom, so a brave knight takes his weapon and battles for the peace in his lands. The game’s plot is not very original – but many gamers just don’t need anything special to begin another great adventure.“Chasm” is interesting by its retro graphics style and (first of all) by procedural levels, which hardly ever repeat themselves (like in the games “The Swords of Ditto” and “Moonlighter”). The hero fights monsters, explore virtual rooms, and prepare his arsenal for the further battles. The game is of the popular now Metroidvania genre – the mix of “Castlevania” and “Metroid” games.
Buy “Chasm” for PS4, PlayStation Vita, or PC:

Dead Cells
This Metroidvania game has quite a gloomy plot, but at the same time, its graphics are bright and colourful, very beautiful.
In a fantastic prison, magic cells occupy dead bodies of prisoners – such happens at the start of every attempt, and after that, players enter very dangerous levels to wipe out all the evilness from the virtual island.
“Dead Cells” offers a very high level of difficulty, which reminds “Celeste” and “Cuphead”. It’s so hard to finish the mission here, and gamers should develop their skills in many tries. Each adventure is different – the prison (and the whole island) procedurally changes its form in new games. Still, some upgrades remain with the character (in his new bodies), so the mission becomes a bit easier.
To play “Dead Cells”, buy the game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or PC:
*Feverish fights in a virtual prison? This reminds the fighting game “Furi”.
Flipping Death
A girl dies and finds herself in the other world. It may seem like not the best experience but turns out to be an interesting adventure. The Death goes on vacation and asks the girl to take his duties. It’s the beginning of this unusual puzzle game. Players control the heroine and help souls of deads to solve their problems and to find peace.
“Flipping Death” allows jumping between worlds – it looks like turning a cardboard and seeing a totally different picture. The girl can possess leaving beings to accomplish various tasks. You should use your brain properly to find the solutions here.
The graphics make this game special. Have a look at the trailer and you’ll understand what I mean.
The game “Flipping Death” is available for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Overcooked 2
What about cooking something… super fun? This game is excellent for this – it offers you a team of chefs, which travel around the virtuality and cook various tasty stuff. But still, the game is not about just cooking – it’s about having lots of fun with friends.
“Overcooked 2” continues the style of the first instalment, where players control their chefs and should handle ever-changing situations in the whirling environment to cook something together. The most significant difference here is the availability of online multiplayer, instead of only couch co-op. Also, the developers have prepared some new recipes, new interesting tasks, and lots of very, very unusual kitchens.
Buy “Overcooked 2” for PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch.

We Happy Few
What if the world may become absolutely beautiful, cheerful, just excellent? And what if you need to take a pill for this every morning? Such questions may arise in the process of playing “We Happy Few” – because its three heroes are in such a situation, and they have decided to see the reality as it is…
The evil government turned the world into an awful place to be. To control people and to make them see nothing terrible around, it came up with a law – taking special drugs is obligatory.
Players control one of three heroes, explore the possibility in this dystopia, fight minions of the regime, collect items to upgrade their skills, and follow the possible turns in the storyline.
The game “We happy Few” is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
Guacamelee! 2
Here we have not only a sequel to a very good game but also an amazing, colourful and quite a difficult action platformer, with a super fun atmosphere.
The hero (in fact a Mexican superhero) going to defeat a new evilness in his world – someone named Salvador. The story is not very significant here. Players should concentrate on hard puzzles and activate their skills of deftness and fast reaction to pass through many traps and defeat many opponents.

*The spirit of “Guacamelee! 2” reminds a bit the free game “Burrito Bizon”.
F1 2018
Unlike the racing games "Need for Speed Payback" and "The Crew 2", here we have rather sports competitions (like in "Gran Turismo Sport" but with F1 cars). Players need to improve their driving skills lap after lap, mastering every turn, every speed-up, every braking…
Only real fans of this motorsports will enjoy this game to the max. For others, it may be too hard, unless you activate help from AI.
The official games of Formula 1 appear year after year, making virtual copies of the F1 seasons. This one contains teams, drivers, and tracks of the season 2018. Players are able to finish the career mode, play quick races, and even try their skills in the online Esports competitions.

PES 2019
There is a group of gamers, which are dedicated to football so much that they almost totally ignore all other genres, all other virtual adventures. For them, such series as FIFA and PES (Pro Evolution Soccer) produce new instalments year after year, improving various technical aspects and adding actual teams, players, stadiums, and leagues.
“PES 2019” is the next attempt to improve virtual football. It would be super interesting to fans of this sport. And it also might be your next fun gaming entertainment even if you don’t really follow football – just to finish the career or to play with friends on one device.

Donut County
Something very tricky happens in the virtual world of this game. Racoons moved to the village and started selling donuts. But whoever buy this tasty (and dreadful for health) sweet delicacy, get… a hole in the ground, which “swallows” everything, from small plants to huge houses and even mountains.
“Donut County” is extraordinarily fun indie-game. Players here read short dialogues of animals in cut-scenes and control that hole in the game rounds. At the start, the hole is small, but you feed it with appropriate objects and make it bigger. First, this task is quite simple, but then involving brain work is needed to understand what to take first, which mechanisms to activate, and how to clear the location totally.
